Plush animals

You know when you would first get a plush stuffed animal and press its velvety skin against yours until you melted together ?

And then over the years and copious squeezes from yourself and others, tosses under car seats and cramming it into your luggage, it loses its velvety touch and its plushness. It becomes coarser, its fabric forms little balls like little roly pollies curled in on themself.

We too can lose our softness as more hands touch us and love us in the ways they learned how to love, which isn’t always love.

We can become coarser, tougher in our texture. We are still as lovable as that first velvety stroke, it can just take a little more tending for our curled up parts to come toward another part reaching toward it, to gingerly open back up to reveal its plush form. There is still softness there.
