Frequently asked questions
What is somatic therapy and how does it differ from other therapy?
Whereas more cognitive-based therapies are looking to analyze patterns of thought and behavior, and this can be useful, we also know that many of these patterns are conditioned trauma and/or stress responses. We want to understand where your system is responding, or likely reacting to something from your history and how we can bring it more into a present-moment, here and now response so you can begin to have more choice and have felt experiences of what these shifts can feel like.
What will our first session be like?
Our initial session is all about beginning to build a sense of safety and grounding within your body and within our therapeutic relationship? We go at your pace as we begin to dip into your goals, patterns that you are hoping to shift, and what you hope to gain from our work together.
Are we there yet? How much longer?
So much of change and transformation depends on wanting what’s on the other side of it more than you want to stay in the familiar patterns. We can’t necessarily predict how long we will be working together, but generally, giving it at least a season: 3-4 months to notice the impact, gauge if we continue to be a mutual fit for working together. Sometimes we will decide together to go down from weekly to bi-weekly sessions, and there are options to pause the work and come back to it; this doesn’t have to be another thing you just have to endure, you want to want to engage in this process and work.
